Five healthy eating tips for busy moms
As a working mom , a huge part of my day is spent at work and by the time I get home , I’m exhausted and would like to spent as little time as possible in kitchen. This means that there are greater chances of me opting for a takeaway and honestly some days I just can’t help it but I know that the best option will always be to prepare a healthy meal for my family. It can also be stressful to start thinking about what you’ll be preparing for dinner at the end of your work day.
There are five things you can do at the start of the week to make preparing healthy meals for your family a lot easier.
Plan out your meals for the week
Take time to decide what you will be having for the week and write out the ingredients you will need. This also gives you the time to plan on which meals will be easier to prepare and also meet your family’s nutritional needs. I personally dislike meals with countless ingredients. I find it time consuming and costly too and therefore I opt for quick meals with simple ingredients I can easily find at the grocery store.
Purchase all the ingredients you will need
Once you have the list of all the grocery items you’ll need for the week , pick a day to go shopping. Weekly visits to the grocery store are necessary mostly for your fresh produce which you cannot purchase in bulk. It is also important to check for items you already have to avoid repurchasing them. I believe I’m not the only one with food stuffs I’ve bought but never got to use. Find a way to repurpose these or incorporate them into your meals. Just let your creative juices flow.
Use Sundays to meal prep
Sunday is a good day to plan for your week and this includes preparing meals and reducing your workload for the week ahead. I love my bean curry and I have it with most of my meals. I usually prepare enough for the week and storing it in a glass container helps to keep it fresh for longer. You can also chop up your veggies and store them in glass containers ready to steam or toss together to make a salad.
Pack lunch to work
Packing your own lunch doesn’t only help you to avoid grabbing something that’s not nutritious but it’s also cost saving. If I cannot drive home for lunch , I make sure that I pack lunch for that day along with healthy snacks.
Have an occasional treat
Rather than saying I will never have cake , allow yourself to have a treat now and then , and the important part being in moderation. My experience with completely eliminating specific foods is that it increases my cravings and when I finally get a chance to have it , I overindulge and this undermines the effort i have already invested to eating healthy.
Healthy eating habits contribute to our overall wellbeing and busy as you are as a working mom, these tips should help you to still manage to have healthy meals no matter what day of the week it is.
